THE city council on Monday tasked three of its committees to study a proposal aimed at trying to prevent a repeat of the Palm Sunday tragedy in Barangay Cugman. The city council tasked the committees on social services, family relations, and public utilities to draft a proposed  ordinance that would impose stricter rules against drunk driving. Councilor Reuben Daba, chairman of the committee on social services, said the penalties for drunk driving should be stiffer. Daba also told the city council that there was a need for an ordinance that would strictly regulate the sale of intoxicating drinks in the city. But Councilor Enrico Salcedo said there are national laws already in place but the enforcement has been wanting. “Wala man gu’y strict enforcement sa balaod... mao na nga naa gyu’y  madisgrasya,” Salcedo said. Councilor Zaldy Ocon said the problem lies with the drivers, and not law enforcement. “Kon dili lang mag-drive basta hubog wala untay accident. Ang problema gyud naa sa mga driver, wala sa law enforcement,” Ocon said. (nitz arancon)
