THE Provincial Health Office (PHO) in Misamis Oriental has issued a warning to the public to remain vigilant as dengue cases continue to rise across the province.
This alert was revealed by Talisayan Vice Mayor Rommel Maslog, who serves as a Provincial Health Consultant in the governor’s office.
As of August 25, a total of 23 dengue-related deaths have been recorded since the beginning of the year, according to Maslog.
The province has reported 2,289 dengue cases during this period, with 89 cases occurring between August 4 and August 25, resulting in one additional death.
Governor Peter Unabia has responded to the situation by issuing an executive order, urging all local government units within the province to implement measures to control the spread of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
The order mandates the cleaning of surroundings and the elimination of potential mosquito breeding sites.
Maslog pointed out that the current weather conditions, which include cold winds, rain, and heat, have contributed to the proliferation of dengue-carrying mosquitoes, as these conditions accelerate mosquito egg-laying, particularly in unsanitary areas.
Aldo Obienza, the provincial dengue coordinator for the PHO, reported that 60 to 70 percent of the dengue victims are elementary school students.
The municipalities of Tagoloan and Jasaan each recorded four deaths, while Libertad and Opol reported two deaths each. Balingasag, Balingoan, Salay, Talisayan, Lagonglong, Medina, and Magsaysay in the First District, along with Alubijid, Manticao, Initao, and Villanueva in the Second District, each reported one death during the same period from January 1 to August 25.
