TAGOLOAN, Misamis Oriental — The Tagoloan River could soon get help from private quarry companies as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) looks for ways to address its shallow and silted portions and help speed up the completion of the Tagoloan Bridge.
DPWH Undersecretary Charles Calima said Aug. 27 that the agency is open to working with private quarry operators to help dredge the river.
“We welcome the private sector na tumulong,” Calima said, adding that the DPWH and stakeholders would discuss the best way to address the river’s condition.
Calima visited Tagoloan on the directive of DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon to assess the river and identify measures that could help move the bridge project forward.
Matthew Valleser, chief of staff of Misamis Oriental 2nd District Rep. Yevgeny Vincente Emano, said assistance from quarry companies could make a significant difference as portions of the river have become increasingly shallow.
He warned that leaving the river’s condition unaddressed could worsen flooding and other problems, particularly with limited flood-control measures in place.
“In the meantime, kung ato nang pasagdan, walay buhaton kay walay flood control, musamot na,” Valleser said.
During a consultation with local officials and other stakeholders, the DPWH team identified portions of the Tagoloan River that may need dredging.
The team also inspected the river to determine what interventions are needed.
Calima said equipment is expected to be put in place within two weeks.
“In two weeks, equipment will be put in place,” he said.
He added that completing the Tagoloan Bridge is now among the DPWH’s priorities and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to completing the project at the soonest possible time.
The dredging proposal, including possible assistance from private quarry companies, is being considered as one way to address the river’s siltation and shallow sections while helping clear the way for progress on the bridge project.
