MISAMIS Oriental 2nd District Rep. Yevgeny Vincente Emano last Saturday, February 8, defended his decision to support the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio, saying it was based on legal grounds rather than political motives or budget concerns.
Emano, who was among the 240 lawmakers who signed the complaint, said the impeachment was driven by seven key issues, including alleged bribery, misuse of confidential funds, and betrayal of public trust.
“We conducted the investigation, but even the public, who watched the budget hearings and case proceedings live, saw how she responded when questioned about the use of confidential and intelligence funds,” Emano said in a mix of English and Cebuano.
Emano dismissed claims that his vote was politically self-serving, acknowledging that it could impact his career but maintaining confidence in his track record.
“Wala mi sukad naglabaw ug kwarta sa among mga kaatbang, kami personally dili mi daghan ug kwarta pero naa mi gamay nga yuta gibilin sa among ginikanan nga dili na mi manglimos sa pag abot sa panahon,” he said adding “Time will tell who is right. If we are wrong, the Senate will dismiss the case.”
He also denied allegations of bribery in securing lawmakers’ support, asserting that his decision was based solely on his belief that Duterte-Carpio had committed violations.
“Our party, Padayon Pilipino, has always stood by its principles. We have never relied on money to win over opponents,” he added.
The impeachment complaint now awaits deliberation in the Senate, where a trial will determine Duterte-Carpio’s fate.
