EXPECT more rain this weekend due to a low pressure area and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the LPA was spotted 295 km east of Mindanao (08.5N, 129.0E) at around 4 am yesterday, and it is embedded along the ITCZ across Visayas.Weather forecaster Chris Perez said the LPA has slim chance of intensifying into a tropical cyclone but still, the agency has continued to monitor it. But if it intensifies inside Philippine territory, it would be named “Egay.” Perez noted that as the LPA moves closer to eastern section of Northern Luzon, it would trigger the southwest monsoon which marks the start of the rainy season.He said that the onset of the rainy season is characterized by southwesterly winds. Pagasa has yet to declare the onset of rainy season as there are “conditions” that have to be met.Aside from the southwest monsoon or “hanging habagat,” Perez said, another criteria before Pagasa can declare the beginning of the wet season is the amount of rainfall, which must register a total of 25 millimeters or more, for five consecutive days in five major weather stations. Last year, Pagasa officially declared the start of the wet season on June 10. Yesterday, cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms were experienced in Mindanao, Visayas, Mindoro, Marinduque,Romblon and Palawan. -pna
