THERE’S this advice for good sleep — that the phone should be far, far away from you, preferably sent to the moon, to prevent it from disturbing you.

I’m now tempted to follow that advice after waking up four times on Wednesday night, prompting me to ask a la Cristopher Diwata a.k.a. Taylor Lautner kalokalike, the lines that have evolved into the most popular marketing strategy: “What hafen, Vella? Why you crying agin? I know... vamfire, rayts?”

Vampire indeed. Couldn’t sleep and loves to eat meat. Haha.

I knew why the sleepless night, though. Some hours before that, I was answering business phone calls that had me thinking, Do I deserve a Jacks Halo-halo taro-ube overload after these?

While cooling down before sleeping, I wasn’t overthinking about the phone calls but I was watching YouTube videos about the carnivore diet as usual, and that must have been the culprit behind the seemingly sleepless night.

I need to sleep on Wednesday night because it’s Boot Camp at the gym the morning after. That’s the most challenging group exercise (GX) class and the Thursday session was no exception.

There are times when Coach Jowen Racines would use plates for the class. No, not plates for food, but weight plates, with 2.5 to 10 kilograms to choose from. Our youngest GX classmate, DJ Dublado, would pick the 10 kilograms, of course, while I would get two plates — 2.5 and five — so I could choose what to use for a particular workout.

For yesterday, it was bodyweight time, therefore, no free weights. The uninitiated may heave a deep sigh of relief upon hearing that, but for us, that means a much more intense workout. And it was. Coach Jowen never disappoints. Whew. This was the right time for Diwata to ask us, “What hafen, Vella? Why you crying agin?” Haha!

And Diwata could have asked me that same question while I was watching “F1.” Yes, I cried while watching “F1” and I’m not even Vella. Perhaps it was the carbo-loading at a birthday party the night before that was making me so sentimental. Yup, there was halo-halo.

“F1” is a movie about winning and the long and winding road it requires as proven by Formula One (F1) car races where the ladder to success is filled with corners, turns, and laps.

After the movie, I heard a cinema staff talking about “F1” lead actor Brad Pitt and his ex-wife Jennifer Lopez. When the other staff she was talking with didn’t know who Lopez is, she went on to describe Lopez as a popular actress and singer. And then she stopped there upon realizing her mistake, and said, Oh, it’s Angelina Jolie, that’s his ex-wife. I wanted to correct her, that there’s indeed a Jennifer in Pitt’s life but it was Jennifer Aniston, not Lopez.

I didn’t expect to like “F1” because, uh, racing cars? Hello? The only car-racing I experienced were the drag races that we… Oops, let’s not go there. Those were the days. The 1980s days.

But after watching the movie, I can now understand why some Filipinos travel far just to watch F1 races.
