THE weather is too hot for any kind of sound, so no muzak for now. Hush. But when I do want to listen to something, there’s the Billboard Top 100 where I learned that “Unholy” is by Sam Smith and someone named Kim Petras.
Who’s Kim Petras? I have no idea. At least I know Sam Smith. Whew. That’s why I’ve stopped watching Hollywood awards shows—listening to the names of the new artists makes me feel older than my age.
While listening to Garbage, I always forget that their lead singer, Shirley Manson, is already 56 years old. Because each time I listen to them, I’m suddenly transported to the ‘90s when their songs were among the muzak that helped me survive, and she was in her 20s and early 30s then. Gosh. How time flies.
Anyway, where was I? Oh, the weather. When it’s hot, the top concern eventually zooms in on the electric bill soaring to infinity and beyond. The high cost of summer living in Pinas. Tsk tsk. This is the dry season that can inspire anyone to shout, I scream for ice cream!
That reminds me. There’s a pint of dark chocolate ice cream in the freezer. It’s high-carb since this particular Pinoy brand has no sugar-free version yet. I had been planning to try this since the pandemic lockdowns in 2020 when my only perk while staying home was food. Since it wasn’t available in Cagayan de Oro yet—or I wasn’t aware of any local distributor—all I could do then was to look at its photos on social media and drool.
Just when it finally had a local distributor, I was already on a diet. I’m not sure if I was on low-carb then, but whatever the diet, ice cream is always a big no. But on Monday last week, we had lunch at the resto that’s selling it here in CDO, and there I was, buying the dark choco flavor. The verdict: Yummiest! But since I’m not used to sweets anymore, I had to wash away its sweetness with lots of water. Darn. I’ll try the salted caramel next time.
Another resto here in CDO also sells ice cream—an imported brand, not Pinoy. And it has a sugar-free version, that is, if “no-added-sugar” means sugar-free.
When I go high-carb nowadays, the food has to be worth it. On special occasions, I’d have a croissant, vanilla cream latte, or a dessert that has piqued my curiosity, and I have to remember this should be once in a blue moon only. And then, I’d fast the day after. Low-carb doctors and coaches have discouraged this practice because it’s always best to consistently follow a low-carb diet.
There are people who can stay healthy with the everything-in-moderation diet. As long as they don’t overeat, they’ll be fine. Unfortunately, I’m not one of them. Uh. Should I give the choco ice cream to the high-carb dieter? Yes, high-carb is also a diet. Look at the old Food Pyramid—all those carbs at the bottom.
