TANGKAL, Lanao del Norte — Grade 6 learners in a conflict-affected community in Lanao del Norte will gain access to digital learning tools after the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) SOCCSKSARGEN deployed its eTuro Digital Learning System at Berwar Integrated School.
The initiative brings 80 ASUS Chromebooks and two full-screen TVs with connectivity to the school in Barangay Berwar, giving teachers and learners additional tools for classroom instruction.
The deployment is part of DOST SOCCSKSARGEN’s Science for Peace program, which seeks to expand access to science, technology and education in underserved communities.
DOST SOCCSKSARGEN Regional Director Engr. Sammy P. Malawan said technology can help address learning gaps caused by distance and limited resources.
He said the initiative is not only about providing equipment but also about giving learners opportunities to learn and build a better future.
“Technology can help bridge gaps caused by distance and limited resources,” Malawan said, stressing that science can contribute to peace not only through laboratories and innovation but also through education.
What eTuro offers
The eTuro system was developed for elementary education and is aligned with the Department of Education’s learning competencies.
It provides digital learning materials in Mathematics, Science, English, Filipino, Araling Panlipunan and Computer, including animated lessons, student guides, classroom activities, assessments and teacher lesson plans.
The system supports face-to-face, online, synchronous and asynchronous learning, with materials available in print, downloadable and online formats.
Malawan said the technology’s success will ultimately depend on how teachers and learners use it.
He described eTuro as a tool that can help ease teachers’ workload while serving as “a bridge between learners and opportunity.”
Pilot site in conflict-affected community
Berwar Integrated School was selected as a pilot site because it is located in the conflict-affected community of Camp Bilal in Barangay Berwar.
Rasmila M. Cosain, DepEd Lanao del Norte Partnership Focal Person, conveyed the division’s appreciation to DOST SOCCSKSARGEN and the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) for supporting the school.
The pilot will initially serve Grade 6 learners and their teachers.
DepEd Lanao del Norte also committed to working with DOST SOCCSKSARGEN and OPAPRU in implementing, monitoring and evaluating the project.
Before the formal turnover, teachers underwent training and installation activities to familiarize them with the system and prepare them for classroom use.
The eTuro initiative is intended to make technology-supported education more accessible in communities where distance, resources and other challenges can limit learning opportunities.
A memorandum of agreement between DOST SOCCSKSARGEN and DepEd Lanao del Norte was also signed during the event, formalizing their partnership for the project.
