CAGAYAN de Oro City — Mindanao’s power grid will be under yellow alert during two periods today, August 11, as available power supply remains tight, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
Mae Roselle Curiano, one of NGCP’s communication focal persons, announced the grid advisory as of 8 a.m. Tuesday.
The yellow alert is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
NGCP reported an available capacity of 2,672 megawatts (MW) against a projected peak demand of 2,527 MW, leaving an operating margin of only 145 MW.
Curiano said 12 generating plants are on forced outage, while five plants are operating at derated capacities, leaving a total of 709.1 MW unavailable to the grid.
Of the plants on forced outage, seven have been unavailable since July, one since June, two since January, one since 2025 and two since 2024.
NGCP cited several factors contributing to the yellow alert, including the maintenance outage of GNPK 2 that began July 28, the extended outage of SEC 2, and the emergency shutdown of GNPK 1 on August 9 due to a boiler tube leak.
A yellow alert is issued when the grid’s operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission system’s contingency requirement.
For consumers, the advisory means power reserves are tight during the affected hours. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from NGCP and their local electric utilities as grid conditions may change throughout the day. (Ben Balce, Editorial Lead)
