OPOL, Misamis Oriental — Police are considering speed limits, streetlights and traffic cameras along the national highway in Barangay Luyong Bonbon after a three-vehicle collision killed a barangay councilor and injured three others.

The crash on Wednesday, Oct. 14, involved a Toyota Fortuner, an Isuzu Traviz and a motorcycle. The fatality was a councilor from Barangay Liberty, Laguindingan. Three other people, including a government official, were injured.

Opol Municipal Police Station chief Major Antonio Luy Jr. said police would review accident records from previous years to determine whether the area needs additional safety measures.

In an interview with Juander Radyo, Luy said police would compare incident data and submit their findings to concerned agencies, including the local government and the Department of Public Works and Highways.

“Ngapahigayon na ang Opol MPS ug back tracking with regards sa mga data of public safety incidents nato sa kani nga streets icompare nato to previous year,” Luy said.

Police will also check whether crashes occur more frequently during the day or at night to help determine what interventions may be needed.

“Tingnan natin yong data kung marami bang incidents sa gabi o sa adlaw,” he said.

Possible measures include speed limits, additional streetlights and closed-circuit television cameras. Police have also coordinated with the local government on the possible installation of traffic lights.

Luy said the police would propose a speed limit to the local chief executive in response to the reported road safety concerns.

The findings and recommendations are set to be presented during Monday's municipal management committee meeting with Opol Mayor Jay Francis Bago.

Police said the review would proceed even though the parties involved in the crash had reportedly reached an agreement.

Luy also urged motorists to use the highway's six lanes responsibly, reminding drivers of slower vehicles to keep to the appropriate lanes and avoid competing with faster-moving traffic.

Authorities have yet to announce which measures, if any, will be implemented following the review.
