THE Cagayan de Oro City Council has approved a resolution to convert a government-owned area in Barangay Baikingon into a new city cemetery.

The plan, formalized under Ordinance No. 2025-662 authored by Majority Floor Leader Edgar Cabanlas, covers a 28,796-square-meter site capable of accommodating over 8,000 tombs.

“Tsada ni sya kay dili na nato paliton, kay public land man. Walay gasto ang atong syudad except to construct the cemetery,” said Cabanlas.

The new facility, to be called the “West-side City Cemetery,” will serve the barangays of Pagatpat, Baikingon, San Simon, Canitoan, Iponan, and Bulua.

Cabanlas pointed out that the project would ease the burden on families by providing a closer alternative to the Bolonsori Cemetery.

While the city government will initially oversee operations, Cabanlas proposed that barangay officials eventually manage the cemetery.

“Atong tudluan ang atong barangay pag manage niini. Para maka income sila ug makatuon sila,” he said.

Development is expected to begin in February with assistance from the City Engineer’s Office.
