A weather specialist at the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) yesterday warned that the country could be hit by as much as 14 storms between now and November, this year. The warning came after the state weather bureau announced the start of the rainy season on Tuesday. Pagasa weather specialist Luz Mercado of the Pagasa-Mindanao station in El Salvador, Misamis Oriental, said local governments and citizens should prepare because Pagasa forecast nine to 14 storms until November. The forecast does not include December. Widespread rains in many areas of the country this week signalled the start of the wet season. Mercado said the easterly winds have been replaced by the southwest monsoon or “hanging Habagat” which explains the widespread rains.
