By NITZ ARANCON, Correspondent A ROMAN Catholic priest yesterday delivered a sweeping accusation against congressmen who voted in favor of the Death Penalty Bill, alleging that they were “bought,” even as a coalition of groups here started to mobilize for a fresh campaign against the restoration of capital punishment. “Only congressmen who lost committee chairmanships in Congress were the ones who were not bought,” Fr. Raul Dael of the St. John Vianney Thoelogical Seminary told a news conference at the Cronin Hall beside the St. Augustine Cathedral here. Fr. Dael did not name any congressman but the four representatives of Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental to the Lower House--Maximo Rodriguez Jr. and Rolando Uy of the city, and Juliette Uy and Peter Unabia of the province--all voted for the controversial bill. Dael called on the government to overhaul the country’s justice system first, citing a 2016 report that as much as 70 percent of court decisions were erroneous. Lawyer Proculo Sarmen, district director of the Knights of Columbus here, said the move to restore capital punishment is a step backwards, calling the proposed measure “barbaric” and  “uncivilized.” “It would be like bringing us back two thousand years ago if we allow the government to restore the death penalty,” said Sarmen even as he called on citizens to pressure the Senate into rejecting the proposed law. “If this gets approved, and if we allow this, then we become like those who kill fellow Filipinos. We were the ones who voted the senators and congressmen into office,” Sarmen said.
