DAVAO City––Former Davao Mayor Sara Duterte said she preferred that her father not seek the presidency, citing Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s age.

“Running for the presidency is like picking up a rock, and hitting it on yourself,” she said.

The younger Duterte, however, said she would support any decision that is made by her father, whether he would run or not.

“He’s 70 years old, and at that age, I don’t think someone can still accept that kind of responsibility,” she said.

It was the first time the former mayor spoke to the press about her father’s likely presidential candidacy.

Her father, meanwhile, has been vocal in supporting his daughter as his replacement in the upcoming elections next year.

He has, however, said he was hands off in his children’s political plans.

Last month, the mayor said it was up to Sara and his son Paolo, who is the city’s vice mayor, to decide among themselves their political plans.

Paolo has, for example, revealed he was interested in running for mayor in case his father makes up his mind on the presidency.

Mayor Duterte has also said his other son Sebastian was not interested in politics. -mindanews
