THE sleep experts are right. Of course they have to be right, otherwise, there’s no hope for the insomniacs.

They’re right about sending the mobile phone to the moon before sleeping, which does result to better sleep. No phone on the bed, on the nightstand or anywhere near the bed.

I wonder if sending the mobile phone to the moon during the day, just when everyone is calling me, will result to a better day. Hmmm. Let’s make that Daytime Mobile Phone Experiment No. 1.

Remember when we only had landlines? Those were the days. Sigh. I could always ask someone else to answer the landline and provide a list of the persona-non-grata people with the warning that if ever the caller is in that list, please tell him I’m out of the house. There was always the possibility that the one answering the landline would tell the caller, Netnet said she’s not here.

Nowadays, when the landline rings, it’s always a wrong number. Because I don’t think the househelp is sharing our landline’s number with anyone. Besides, they don’t know our landline number, they didn’t care to ask. They also have their own mobile phones, making the house’s landline as obsolete as typewriters.

But landlines in offices are still working nine-to-five, much like the 1980 movie, “9 to 5,” and its theme song, “9 to 5”: “Workin’ nine to five, what a way to make a living/Barely gettin’ by it’s all takin’ and no givin’.” Oh. The woes of a landline. But nothing compares to the woes of a mobile phone: Workin’ 24/7, what a way to make a living. Unless it’s sent to the moon.

Aliens don’t need mobile phones—they have extraterrestrial intelligence. Meaning, while human beings are relying on ChatGPT for their speeches and digital paintings, aliens will only have to think of what they want and—voila!—there it is. No effort at all.

On the other hand, corrupt government officials still need to exert effort in stealing from the national treasury which is allegedly their hard habit to break. They still have to call other government officials to make the alleged stealing happen. There’s that need to follow up where their share of the loot is. I wonder what they do with the money. Collect Birkins? Buy the $55-million Graff Diamonds Hallucination watch? Or the $26.2-million Rolls-Royce Boat Tail?

Once the stealing starts, there’s no end to what the stealer can wish for. The more, the merrier.

The Pinoy taxpayer bears the burden of making those wishes come true. I don’t have to enumerate anymore the many ways that business owners and employees are sacrificing so corrupt government officials can steal. Okay, allegedly, supposedly, reportedly, just to make the stealing sound unsure, doubtful, requires further investigation.

The alleged graft and corruption have been there since forever, it’s nothing new. So if you’re a Pinoy of a certain age, meaning, you were already old enough to join the 1986 People Power, might as well enjoy your retirement and ignore Pinas’s political landscape.

Ignore?! Que horror! If fixing the Pinoy government will help you achieve complete healing, then, go ahead, be a superhero: Ding, ang bato!

But if it will delay your healing, better send SOS signals to the Fantastic Four.
