A 72-year-old trisikad driver was rushed to the hospital after he was stabbed and then hacked by his own stepson, a carpenter yesterday evening.
Police Maj. Julius Saluta, Police Station 2 chief, said the victim, Eufrosino Paglinawan, widow, and a resident of Balangaw, Sitio Taguanao, Barangay Indahag, Cagayan de Oro City, sustained a stabbed wound to his abdomen and another hack wound to his head.
The suspect has been identified as Joel Japlag, 28, married, residing at the same place is now inside a mini-cell at the said police station.
Prior to the arrest, it was learned that the victim, who had just arrived from work, was met by Japlag and without provocation stabbed the former.
“Bag-o lang giabot ang biktima sa ilang puloy-anan unya gitagbo siya sa suspek nga niadtong higayona naghulata na diay sa iya. Miingon dayon si Japlag nga maayong gabii kol sabay na dayon dunggab,” Saluta said.
Paglinawan, according to Saluta, was able to evade the attack and even tried to snatch the weapon from his attacker but due to his old age, he was overpowered by the suspect and hacked him on the head.
Neighbors who witnessed the incident immediately pacified the two and brought the bloody victim to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center for treatment and delivered the suspect to the police.
In an interview with the suspect, he told police he did such a thing after knowing that the latter had sexually abused the 12-year-old niece of his wife.
In fact, he said a rape case had already been filed at the prosecutor’s office waiting for a resolution.
Saluta said further investigation is ongoing. He said his office is also waiting for a formal complaint from the victim against the suspect for the incident.
