CAGAYAN de Oro City — Residents of eastern Cagayan de Oro are expected to gain wider access to medical services as the City Hospital in Tablon formally changed hands on Tuesday, October 27, with the city government targeting its development into an infirmary by the first quarter of 2027.
Mayor Rolando “Klarex” Uy led the ceremonial turnover of the facility, which opened to the public as a primary care center on August 26, 2025.
The hospital has been serving patients, but its services have remained limited as the city addressed infrastructure requirements, including road access and the relocation of families affected by the project.
Acting Chief of City Hospital-Tablon Dr. Geenen Macadaeg welcomed the turnover, saying it would help expand healthcare services for the community.
Macadaeg reported that the facility catered to around 12,000 people from January to October, while its Animal Bite Treatment Center served about 9,000 patients.
The turnover marks a step toward expanding the hospital’s services, including emergency care, outpatient consultations, minor operations, laboratory testing, pharmacy services and animal bite treatment.
For residents, expanded services could mean less time and money spent traveling to the city center for medical consultations and treatment, particularly for those living in eastern Cagayan de Oro and nearby communities.
Uy thanked those who helped complete the hospital, describing it as a long-held goal to bring public service closer to residents.
The city government and Barangay Tablon Council, led by Barangay Captain Romeo Bacarro, worked together to address challenges affecting the hospital’s development, according to the city government.
Meanwhile, during the People’s Day program in Barangay Tablon on October 26, Uy also urged residents to report city government and J.R. Borja General Hospital (JRBGH) personnel whom they believe have displayed improper conduct or provided unsatisfactory service.
He encouraged residents to obtain the names of personnel involved so the city government could assess complaints and take appropriate action.
While the mayor’s remarks covered city government offices and JRBGH, his call for accountability underscores the importance of proper conduct and responsive service in public institutions, including healthcare facilities.
The hospital’s next challenge is to ensure that its expanded services are consistently available, adequately staffed and equipped to meet residents’ medical needs.
The turnover was attended by members of the 21st City Council, Barangay Tablon officials, city department heads, doctors, nurses and hospital staff.
