JULY is kind of, hmmm, I don’t know what’s with this month. The clouds? The rain? The waterspout in Opol, Misamis Oriental?
Yes, Opol had a waterspout. And “Twisters” was showing at a theater near you. Timing!
A waterspout, however, is not a twister. As to when a waterspout can develop into a twister, let’s ask Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, the stars of the first or OG (original) “Twister” which was released in 1996.
28 years later, and here’s its sequel, “Twisters.” I haven’t watched it yet but I gotta feeling it now includes the dangers of climate change, and that must be the reason its title is plural—with an s—and not Twister 2. All these twisters happening at the same time. Oh. My. Gosh.
If residents in flood-prone areas need to transfer to higher ground, twister-prone areas may need bomb shelters in lieu of basements. The common denominator of the two: water. Which, by the way, carved the Grand Canyon. That’s how strong water is.
Between no water and no electricity, people will always choose the latter. Because no water can mean unquenched thirst, no bath, no shower, no flushing of toilets, no clean clothes, no cooking, no baking, and a not-so-pleasant body odor in Cagayan de Oro wafting out to Siberia. Eww.
No electricity, on the other hand, can mean dinner by candlelight; early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise; no air conditioning; no electric fan; no ice; no cold drinks; no hot water in the shower.
You don’t need hot shower water, anyway, if the weather is hot already.
But the triathlete may need a hot shower after a triathlon.
I’m more of a try-athlete. My workouts have to be modified because of the injured left knee. Plus the senior-moment whatever that made me one of the candidates for a strict stay-home protocol during the pandemic lockdowns.
So, I try each workout, even the gym’s group workouts, with the knee and senior-moment woes in mind. I make pa-cute. No jumping. I check what the smart watch is telling me. Which I sometimes forget to use in monitoring each workout. Senior moment pa more.
When monitors are revealing the side effects of high-carb intake, processed food, sugar-free drinks, keto goodies, late nights, caffeine, and stress, I stay home and don’t exercise. And I go back to the most strict low-carb diet which I have to follow now to avoid the side effects. There’s always a lesson learned and here’s hoping the lesson will stay in mind forevermore.
Veering away from the strict low-carb diet may show immediate side effects or it may take days, weeks, months, and years for those side effects to appear. So, there’s the cumulative and the non-cumulative.
Drinking coffee, for example, makes my knee complain right after, as I rise from that chair where I was sitting while sipping that coffee. I actually have this thought bubble now of making the sign of the cross while drinking coffee, hoping the knee won’t complain.
Plants are poison. That’s their defense mechanism since, unlike animals, they can’t shout, run, walk, crawl, they don’t have fangs and claws. Meanwhile, a lion’s roar somewhere is making people flee to safer ground.
Anyway, in case you haven’t noticed, coffee is a plant.
