MISAMIS Oriental Governor Peter M. Unabia dismissed rumors that the provincial government plans to sell or act as an agent in selling the Misamis Oriental II Rural Electric Service Cooperative (Moresco II) to the Manila Electric Company (Meralco).

Speaking at the Misamis Oriental Power Consumers’ Forum on February 21, Unabia refuted claims made by former Vice Governor Jose Mari Pelaez on social media, calling them “a big lie.”

Pelaez had posted on Facebook questioning whether the provincial government was brokering a deal for Meralco to take over Moresco I and II.

Meralco’s Chief of External and Government Affairs, Atty. Arnel P. Casanova, also clarified at the forum that the company is not seeking a takeover but is proposing a joint venture to enhance Moresco II’s services.

Casanova cited Mindanao’s economic growth and its potential for investment, pointing out that Meralco could provide financial resources and expertise to improve local energy services.

Unabia reaffirmed that the forum’s purpose was to discuss solutions for improving the electricity situation in Misamis Oriental, particularly in District 1, and not to facilitate a Meralco takeover.

He added that his office remains open to discussions for the province’s development and challenged Pelaez to engage in direct dialogue on the matter.
