MISAMIS Oriental Governor Peter Unabia, today, May 19, led the weekly flag-raising ceremony at the Provincial Capitol and called on provincial employees to stay positive as he begins a period of reflection following his loss in the May 12 elections.

In his first public address since the defeat, Unabia encouraged Capitol employees to “clap with life” after he was greeted with a subdued round of applause.

“Mura man sad nagpakpak sa mga pildiro. Pakpak nga naay kinabuhi,” Unabia remarked, likening the slow clapping to a cheer for the defeated and urging staff to show more spirit.

Despite the outcome of the election, Unabia maintained an optimistic tone, saying that God remains present in both good and difficult times.

“This is my time to be silent, to retrieve, to reflect on what went wrong with my governance,” he said.

Unabia acknowledged that his loss marked a difficult period, but he expressed hope that the next administration would bring improved governance to the province.

He urged Governor-elect Juliette Uy to continue key initiatives, particularly the scholarship program and parts of his flagship Single Digit Poverty Index (SDPI) campaign.

“I believe that education can break the chain of poverty,” he emphasized.

Unabia also expressed gratitude to those who supported his administration, including Vice Governor Jeremy Jonahmar Pelaez and members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.

He added that a meeting will be held to evaluate shortcomings during his term, reiterating that his leadership style was consultative rather than authoritarian.

Meanwhile, Provincial Administrator John Venice Ladaga confirmed that preparations are underway for the transition to Uy’s administration.

“We are forming our transition committee and coordinating with the transition team of Governor-elect Juliette Uy,” Ladaga said.

He added that they are completing the necessary documents in accordance with the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s (DILG) memorandum circular for a smooth turnover.

Ladaga, like Unabia, expressed hope that Uy will continue some components of the SDPI program to help alleviate poverty in the province.

In closing, Unabia said his life has been full of trials, but he overcame them through faith and prayer.

“In due time, God will make it beautiful,” he said, referencing Sunday’s homily and reminding everyone to love one another.
