FORMER Congresswoman Juliet Uy came out with guns blazing, firing salvos at her rival as she filed her candidacy for governor of Misamis Oriental last week.
Uy said she is taking issue with incumbent Misamis Oriental governor Peter Unabia’s alleged selective distribution of assistance. She said the current administration seems to favor only allies to the detriment of everybody else.
She said if elected, she would put a stop to this practice which, she said, is encouraging laziness and mendicancy among the usual beneficiaries of provincial assistance.
“Dili kay dool sa dughan mao ra to ilang tagaan, kwarta sa AICS, kwarta sa Akap. Sigig kuha sa kwarta sa gobyerno, pero ayuda balik balik, nahimo na nuog tapulan ang mga tao (They should not only pick people close to them as beneficiaries of AICS and Akap. They always give out government money as assistance. That is way people have become lazy),” said Uy.
Uy is referring to the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) and Ayuda sa Kapos and Kita Program (Akap) both social welfare programs of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)that provide medical, burial, and financial assistance, among others, to marginalized families and individuals.
Local government units help identify beneficiaries of these programs.
She said she understood the idea but said people should not become dependent on the national government.
Uy also threw shade at her rival, saying money alone will not win campaigns.
“Mao na akong iprove sa inyo karon nga dili tanan kwarta. Mao manang panghinadlok nila permi nga daghan sila kwarta (I will prove to everybody that it is not all about money. That is what they always say, that they have plenty of money),” Uy said.
Uy is the gubernatorial candidate for ‘Team Unity.’
Other members of the Team Unity slate include incumbent Board Member Fredrick Khu for vice governor and Karen Lagbas as First District representative.
Team Unity is not fielding a candidate for the province's Second District.
For members of the Misamis Oriental Provincial Board, Team Unity candidates include Christian Khu, Princess Emano, Ronald Winstanley, and Borris Actub for the First District; and for Second District the team is fielding Jun Lim, Jerry Khu, Jhubert Pamisa, and Jun Romualdo.
