I have a tiny resident lizard in my bedroom. Sometimes I shoo it away and when it doesn’t budge, I presume it’s dead. But I shoo it away a second time and it leaves, so, it’s alive then.

Last night, it was on the bathroom sink and stayed there while I was washing my hands. I was afraid the hand soap might affect it somehow so I did the washing as far away from it as possible.

Lizards, cockroaches, spiders, mosquitoes, flies, ants, bed bugs, and insects are the unwanted species inside the house.

Outside of the house, there are birds, bats, frogs, snails, worms, fireflies, stray cats, stray dogs, and snakes.

Those birds could be a cockatoo and other beautiful bird species whose names I’m clueless about since I’m not a birdwatcher.

Had I kept live pigs instead of collecting their stuffed-toy and figurine versions, I would have piggeries by now but surely the village won’t allow that.

Yes, I love pigs both as decor and as food. Which I’m sure sounds strange to fur moms and dads who will never consider making recipes with their cats and dogs as ingredients.

A dog is not only man’s best friend, it can also give hints on how to cure an illness. If your pet dog happens to stop eating for, say, three days, and simply sleeps on its dog bed for a complete rest, let it be. On the fourth day, it will rise and shine and will resume eating as if nothing happened in the past three days.

When a Cagayan de Oro downtown mall’s dirty water reservoir gave gastroenteritis to its clients — allegedly, supposedly, reportedly? — the three-day fast could have been the best reset. But it’s best done by low-carb dieters and carnivores who are used to fasting daily through their TMAD — two meals a day — or OMAD — one meal a day — practice. High-carb dieters would have a difficult time in suddenly adopting fasting to cure an illness, thus, the rush to hospitals and barangay health centers for the antidote.

A Cagayanon would expect that a mall’s water reservoir is always clean. But if it’s not, where does he go from there? So, don’t order the kinilaw, sashimi, veggie salads, shakes, smoothies, fruit juices, halo-halo, iced tea, and other recipes that have ice, raw ingredients, and raw water. And don’t drink the service water. He can only hope the mall’s bottled water doesn’t come from the water reservoir. Whew.

Having gastroenteritis can make one think, Which is worse, this or influenza?

My first bout with gastroenteritis was in Davao after eating sashimi at a beach resort in Samal Island way back in 1987. This required a one-week rest at Insular Hotel, which is now Waterfront Insular Hotel. My daily diet was lugaw and boiled eggs especially prepared by the hotel’s kitchen staff.

My second was in 2004 when I ate a pineapple. I was using a desktop then in writing pieces and columns for a local newspaper while seated on a chair like the Hunchback of Notre Dame. I couldn’t sit up straight due to the acute tummy pain.

So, gastroenteritis must be worse than influenza otherwise I won’t remember the years when it happened to me.
