IF praying the rosary doesn’t work, using YouTube low-carb-fasting videos as white noise helps me sleep. Aside from taking magnesium glycinate, that is.

A good night’s sleep is essential. Diets are useless without it. That’s why being awake at 1 am stresses me out: Oh my gosh, it’s already 1 am, and I’m still awake. There are times when I’m asleep by 9 pm, only to wake up at 2 am, and there’s the stress again: Oh my gosh, it’s only 2 am, and I’m already awake.

I always heave a deep sigh of relief after sleeping through the night, meaning, no interruptions, no bathroom visits, no nightmares, and then waking up at 6 am or later, and not at the ungodly hour of 2 am. Because going back to sleep after 2 am is one of life’s most difficult challenges. I used to read a book each time that happened, and I’d still stay awake until sunrise. Whew.

People of a certain age have shorter sleeping hours, perhaps because they already slept while watching action and horror movies that were showing at theaters this year. “Fast X,” “The Flash,” “Insidious: The Red Door,” “John Wick: Chapter 4,” “Kandahar,” “Meg 2: The Trench,” “Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Oppenheimer,” “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” etc.

How could anyone sleep while watching action and horror films? That’s the question. But that did happen to me many years ago when I was, ahem, much younger. Too tired to roam around a mall after an early flight to Manila, we opted to watch an action movie instead. If only I could remember its title. Hmmm.

I did understand the sleepiness for “Oppenheimer.” Since Christopher Nolan didn’t redub its dialogue, there were some scenes that made me ask, Unsa daw? The constant question marks hovering above the dialogue could have made the film boring had I not known what the story was all about. Knowing the ending—the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki—kept my curiosity awake.

What a sad story, though. They could have spent the $2 billion to discover cures for many diseases or to feed the world or to prevent climate change from happening or whatever was and still is essential to humanity’s survival.

I watched almost all of the movies I listed above, except for “Insidious” since I don’t like scary movies.

And, yes, I watched “Meg 2.” Which was kind of a B movie that’s trying to be “Jaws” and “Jurassic Park” rolled into one, complete with neverending action scenes and a character (Jiuming Zhang played by Wu Jing) that seemed to have nine lives.

I didn’t include “Barbie” in the above list since it’s not an action or horror film. But with all that pink keeping the audience awake, I don’t think it made anyone sleepy.

Some people don’t go to cinemas anymore. They’d rather stay home and watch Netflix. It’s the more practical choice. There’s no traffic, no need to drive on flooded streets during rainy weather, you can pause the movie anytime for bathroom breaks, or to prepare or order snacks. And if you fall asleep, it’s okay because you’re not paying Netflix for each movie anyway.
