THE goal is to waste, er, spend only an hour every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on Facebook. This Ms Behavin’ column has an MWF schedule, so, when I’m posting this, that’s the only time I should be on FB.

But like the goal weight, goals may require some time to be achieved. Even the goal weight has not been reached yet, and that’s after a year of no red meat and a year and a half of low-carb. Since I refuse to starve myself, my body weight may remain the same for now.

Goals are there for your to-do list, and not for comparing your achievements with that of others where you end up desperately rating people as who’s who and who’s not.

Looking at the other side of the fence will only make you achieve the goals of the one living on that other side of the fence, and not your own goals. There’s a reason for horses to wear blinders—to keep them away from distraction.

Besides, if you believe the grass is always greener on the other side, you will be too depressed to formulate goals for yourself. Instead, you will be busy gossiping about other people and looking down on their achievements.

If you know someone who’s constantly gossiping about others, get to know that gossiper first and find out how she’s doing. You don’t even have to go far in your research. By simply looking at her, you will already know.

The gossiper talks about you because she’s covering up for what she lacks. And she will now focus on what you lack, so other people won’t see what she doesn’t have.

“Misery loves company,” as the saying goes, and that’s the reason the miserable gossiper wants everyone else to be miserable, too. Once she reaches a certain age that may make her goals impossible, she will then begin to destroy your image, for her to win the contest that she has created in her delusions.

The only contest worth pursuing is the one that stars you—your past self, your current self, and your future self.

Whatever makes other people happy will not necessarily make you happy. For example, I’m in love with the Jollibee mascot. Some people love Ronald McDonald. To each their own.

Each of us can choose to appreciate other people’s hobbies and talents instead of putting them down. But the gossiper will always choose to be negative about all things, seeing only the dark side.

There’s this particular gossiper who doesn’t belong to an exclusive circle anymore after that circle’s godmother kicked her out. If the mafia has a godfather, this circle has a godmother. Anyway, she had a belated Realization 101—that the gossiper has driven away her (godmother’s) friends. But it’s too late now. That realization should have happened decades ago when that gossiper began to act as godmother’s unofficial bodyguard.

Since the gossiper is out, there are two people now controlling that exclusive circle on the godmother’s behalf. Tsk tsk. The hunger for power never ends.
