CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Young athletes across Mindanao will get the chance to compete against an international team without leaving the island after Timor-Leste accepted an invitation to join the inaugural Mindanao Youth Games in Tubod, Lanao del Norte.

The five-day competition, set for March 17 to 21, 2027, will bring together athletes aged 8 to 18 from the Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, Soccsksargen, Caraga, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). Timor-Leste will be the only foreign delegation participating in the event.

For young athletes, the games offer more than a shot at medals. They provide rare international exposure, opportunities to learn from overseas competitors, and a chance to showcase their talent before a wider audience—all without leaving Mindanao.

World-Class Venue

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman John Patrick Gregorio said the participation of Timor-Leste highlights the role of sports in building friendships and opening new opportunities for young people.

"This is more than just competition. It is about building bridges, discovering talent, and using sports as a platform for peace and development," Gregorio said.

He added that hosting an international delegation also demonstrates that world-class sporting events can thrive outside Metro Manila.

Direct Sports Exchange

Beyond the competition, the partnership will allow Filipino and Timorese athletes and coaches to exchange skills and training methods.

Timor-Leste's football program is expected to provide valuable learning opportunities for local players, while the Philippines will showcase arnis through clinics and exhibition events.

Timor-Leste Ambassador Marciano Octavio Garcia Da Silva said youth sports can strengthen ties between neighboring countries.

"Sports is a universal language. By joining these events, Timor-Leste and the Philippines are not only competing but also sharing culture, friendship, and mutual respect," he said.

Boost For Lanao Economy

The event is also expected to benefit Lanao del Norte's economy by attracting athletes, coaches, families, and visitors, boosting hotels, restaurants, transport services, and local tourism.

Rep. Imelda "Angging" Quibranza-Dimaporo said hosting the international event is a milestone for the province and an opportunity to introduce more visitors to Lanao del Norte.

"This hosting is a dream that will become a reality for our province. I hope our countrymen will include Lanao del Norte on their bucket list. This is a land of beauty and bounty where people are warm and hospitable," she said.

As Tubod prepares to welcome hundreds of athletes in March 2027, the inaugural Mindanao Youth Games promise local competitors something few youth tournaments can offer—a chance to test themselves on an international stage while competing close to home.
