THE Philippine National Police in Region 10 here in Cagayan de Oro City under the leadership of Brig Gen Jaysen de Guzman Regional Commander, called on the public to avoid the spread of fake news or fabricated information, by reposting or posting and sharing on social media, especially on Facebook. And warned everyone will be face charges if they are caught and identified in making false information.
Police Major Joann Navarro, spokesperson of PNP 10, said in an interview that the call was made following the spread of fake news possibly related to politics in Cagayan de Oro City. And even the Supreme Court has recently been a victim of false and fabricated information amid the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
However, Major Navarro said that the police are continuing to find ways to catch and to file appropriate charges against those who post, share a fabricated information or create fake news.
Earlier, the Supreme Court issued an statement dated March 17 urging the public to rely only on official announcements published on its website (sc.judiciary.gov.ph) and caution against sharing unverified information and urged the public to first verify the authenticity of a statement claiming to be from the Supreme Court before spreading it.
The Supreme Court has issued an statement taken notice of social media posts circulating online, particularly from Facebook accounts sharing a fabricated document as posted on March 16, 2025. The document, falsely attributed to the Supreme Court Spokesperson, bears the title "Supreme Court Receives Petition on 16 Million Signatures Calling for President Marcos' Resignation."
Also in a statement that facebook accounts
were claimed in separate posts that the Supreme Court En Banc convene on March 17, 2025, to discuss the alleged petition. The Supreme Court has denied saying "this is completely untrue". The Supreme Court has not received any such petition, and no En Banc session is scheduled on that date to tackle the matter.
These acts of disinformation, including previous false reports on March 11, 2025, alleging that the Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order.
Major Navarro said that the PNP in Region 10 is also gathering information on whether any local Facebook accounts are involved in sharing false information on social media, as experienced by the Supreme Court.
In this situation, Major Navarro also called for the public's cooperation in filing complaints and providing information regarding the spread of fake news in the social media.
She also urged all media members to help in combating against fake news and other related issues, as this newspaper (Gold Star Daily) was recently a victim once again
