CAGAYAN de Oro City Mayor Rolando Uy is considering making changes to an existing ordinance that would impose penalties on businesses that fail to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on their premises.
This proposal emerged during discussions with City Councilor Romeo Calizo, who oversees the committee on public safety.
Uy believes that revising the ordinance to include provisions for canceling or not renewing business permits of non-compliant establishments is necessary.
The goal is to improve security measures in light of a recent daytime robbery at a pawnshop, where valuable jewelry worth P9 million was stolen.
Uy has directed the city police director to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and emphasizes the importance of upholding peace and order in the city.
“We are deeply saddened by this major crime,” said Uy adding that it signifies the need for increased efforts in ensuring the safety and tranquility of the city.
Mayor Uy called on acting City Police Director Col. Salvador Radam to conduct a detailed investigation and step up police monitoring.
After the briefing on Wednesday afternoon, Radam had been consistently keeping the mayor informed about the investigation’s progress.
According to Radam, the robbery resulted in the theft of jewelry and gadgets valued at approximately P9 million, and an employee of Gold Mega Jewelry Store on JR Borja Street was injured.
Radam clarified that this incident is not connected to any plot aimed at disrupting the peace and order of Cagayan de Oro City during the month-long Higalaay Festival.
He revealed that the ongoing investigation indicates personal gain as the primary motive behind the crime.
During a meeting on Thursday witth Calizo, Uy called for a review of the ordinance requiring the installation of CCTV cameras in businesses and suggested including penalties for non-compliance.
The mayor also urged residents to cooperate with the security measures implemented throughout the city and report any disturbances or illegal activities to the authorities.
“I appeal to the community to continue supporting our local police and to cooperate with the security measures that are being implemented,” Uy said.
