CAGAYAN de Oro City Councilor Edgar Cabanlas has initiated a move to promote unity and inclusivity in response to controversial remarks made by Misamis Oriental Governor Peter Unabia during his recent campaign events.
Gov. Unabia’s comments, delivered on April 1 in Balingoan town, have even drawn criticism and prompted Cabanlas calls for reconciliation.
The governor’s statements, which reportedly targeted the Muslim community and referenced specific areas within Cagayan de Oro, have sparked concern.
Unabia is running for re-election.
In response, Cabanlas presented a resolution during the City Council’s regular session on Monday, April 7.
The resolution aims to condemn discrimination and promote inclusivity, according to Cabanlas.
Just earlier, the governor’s remarks have also led to increased scrutiny.
Muslim groups are calling for a boycott of Amaya View, a resort owned by Unabia.
During a campaign event in Balingoan town, Unabia allegedly cautioned voters against supporting candidates linked to politicians from Marawi, hinting at potential criminal connections.
Unabia also reportedly displayed images of attacks and ambushes, raising concerns about the spread of crime.
His son, Christian, is also seeking re-election in the 1st District, facing opposition from lawyer Karen Lagbas.
In an earlier report, the group 1Bangsa, a multisectoral group of Bangsamoro leaders, has threatened to issue a ‘Fatwa’ against Unabia unless he issues a public apology and presents a plan for anti-discrimination initiatives.
1Bangsa National President Maulana Balangi condemned Unabia’s remarks as “hate speech” directed towards Muslims.
Balangi stated that the remarks were a “deliberate attack against the dignity of Muslims” and demanded a public apology and a forum with Barmm leaders.
Councilor Cabanlas stressed the importance of unity and encouraged the city’s diverse population to foster respect and understanding.
