Father Der John Faborada, director of the archdiocese social action center, disclosed this yesterday and that this was finalized in a meeting at the Archbishop’s House last Sunday.

Faborada said that Cardinal Orlando B. Quevedo of Cotabato has been invited to be the presider of the installation ceremonies at the Saint Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral, the seat of the archdiocese.

Quevedo, the first-ever cardinal from Mindanao and former president of the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines, has yet to confirm his presence.

Cabantan, who learned of his appointment four days after his 63rd birthday last June 19, disclosed that his coat of arms would carry the motto: “Spe Salvi Facti Sumus” (In hope we were saved).

He said that his motto, which comes from the letter of St. Paul to the Romans, Rome 8:24, is “timely” for during a pandemic period.

“No matter how many obstacles, trials, and difficulties we may encounter in this journey, we are always hopeful that by God’s grace all shall be well,” said the Bukidnon bishop for 10 years before his new appointment.

Cabantan, a native of Lagonglong, Misamis Oriental, is the first to become archbishop from the 69-year old archdiocese, which comprises the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Camiguin and the municipality of Malitbog, Bukidnon with over a million Catholics in 62 parishes and 165 priests.

His predecessor, 77-year old Jesuit priest Antonio Javellana Ledesma whose retirement was accepted by Pope Francis, has become an archbishop emeritus.

In the meantime, Ledesma, who has served as archbishop for 14 years, was designated as archdiocese administrator until the consecration of his successor.

Three archbishops had steered the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro: Jesus Balaso Tuquib (1988-2006), Patrick Henry Cronin (1970-1988), and James Thomas Gibbons Hayes, S.J. (1933-1970).
