OFFICIALS and employees of Cagayan de Oro City joined hands on Friday, September 22, to celebrate the 123rd Civil Service Commission (CSC) anniversary with a large-scale tree planting event.
The Chief of Staff of the City Mayor's Office, Sheila Lumbatan, said that the simultaneous tree-planting activity took place in Barangay Pagatpat and the mangrove reserve of Barangay Bonbon, with the participation of over 300 City Hall employees.
The collective effort resulted in the planting of 500 mangrove seedlings, an initiative led by the Human Resource Management Department under the leadership of Xsyclyn Faith 'Kansai' Lumbatan.
"This event was a manifestation of the city's commitment to giving back to nature and protecting the environment, a cause strongly championed by Mayor Klarex," said Lumbatan.
In the past, Lumbatan said Mayor Uy has proven his dedication to environmental conservation through several initiatives.
One such effort is the monthly city-wide cleanup drive, known as “Klarex's Cleanliness in the Streets and Homes”.
"This movement was launched in alignment with the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (Republic Act 9000) and City Ordinance No. 13378-2018, the "Integrated Eco-biological Solid Waste Management Ordinance," according to Lumbatan."
Adding to the list of environmental activities, the CSC also inaugurated the Lingkod Bayani Eco Park in Barangay Pagatpat during the anniversary celebration.
City Administrator Lawyer Hilarion Roy Raagas, along with representatives from other regional and city government offices, attended the ceremonial tree planting at the said eco-park.
“The Lingkod Bayani Eco Park is more than just a recreational space, it stands as a symbol of our commitment to the environment,” Raagas stated.
He expressed hope that the park would serve as a constant reminder for everyone to take part in preserving the environment.
The event drew representatives from various government agencies across the city and the region, showcasing a united front for environmental conservation.
Among these was the regional education department, led by Assistant Regional Director Dr. Eric Martin.
Raagas expressed his gratitude to all city hall employees and representatives of the various government agencies for their support and participation in the event.
"Our service to the public extends beyond our offices and jobs. We also need to serve Mother Nature. Raagas said.
The CSC plans to host more service and environment-focused initiatives in the coming months.
"Our initiatives do not end today. This is an ongoing process and we must continue to serve, not just our co-workers, but everyone, especially our environment," Raagas further emphasized.
As Cagayan de Oro City moves forward, the Lingkod Bayani Eco Park is expected to usher in a shift in people's attitudes toward their environmental responsibilities.
The city assures its residents that it will continue taking concrete steps toward the protection and enhancement of nature.
