THE Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) on Saturday, April 18, addressed false claims circulating on social media regarding a recent commotion at the Cagayan de Oro Water District (COWD), last week.

In a statement, Cocpo — speaking on behalf of Police Station 2 (Cogon) — called the information being shared online “blatant and offensive,” adding that it is inaccurate and damaging to the reputation of police officers involved.

“The PNP operates under strict adherence to rules, regulations, and the Police Operational Procedures. When a crime is committed, proper legal processes must be followed, including investigation, due process, and fact verification,” the statement reads.

Cocpo clarified that no arrest was made during the incident, as the conditions required for a warrantless arrest were not met.

Both parties involved denied responsibility for the broken glass door at COWD’s entrance and blamed each other. The absence of eyewitnesses or clear evidence prevented immediate determination of fault.

“The elements of a warrantless arrest were not present. The crime was neither committed in the presence of officers nor did the responding officers have personal knowledge of the incident,” the statement reads in part.

Cocpo emphasized that even City Director Police Col. Salvador Radam acted with prudence, professionalism, and impartiality, ensuring both parties were heard and their rights protected.

“We stand by the PNP’s commitment to uphold peace and order. We trust the public understands the distinction between factual reporting and unfounded social media rumors,” the statement reads.

Cocpo warned the public that spreading false or misleading information is punishable under existing laws, including the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 10175).

The police confirmed they are consulting legal professionals to determine the appropriate course of action.

“The public is urged to verify information before posting online and to avoid drawing conclusions without facts,” the police office added.

Cocpo reaffirmed its commitment to due process, transparency, and public trust during times of heightened scrutiny.
