IN an inspiring event, City Mayor's Office Chief of Staff, Sheila Lumbatan on Tuesday announced that a highly successful kick-off activity for Drug Abuse Prevention and Control (DAPC) Month 2023, titled 'Run for Hope', took place on Saturday, November 4.
"The activity is part of Drug Awareness and Prevention Week celebration," Lumbatan said.
She said that the event, organized by the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC) under the leadership of Mayor Rolando 'Klarex' Uy and co-chaired by City Councilor Romeo Calizo, saw the participation of a hundred individuals.
Under the theme "People First! STOP STIGMA and DISCRIMINATION, Strengthen Prevention," this significant activity aimed to address the issue of drug abuse in the community.
It was designed to emphasize the importance of putting people at the forefront of efforts to combat drug addiction, according to Lumbatan.
Councilor Calizo expressed tremendous optimism about the city's program, particularly the Community-Based Drug Rehabilitation Program (CBDRP), and its ability to support individuals who use drugs (PWUDs), while also ensuring the city's commitment to becoming drug-free.
To further boost the morale of recovering PWUDs, Councilor Calizo encouraged them to remain hopeful about their current situation and to strengthen their determination for a brighter future.
During the event, Dr. Rhyselle Bernadette Melliza-Descallar extended her gratitude to the various government agencies, individuals, groups, barangays, the CBDRP, and all those who actively participated in this influential campaign.
Their collective effort was crucial in making the event a resounding success, said Lumbatan.
Lumbatan added that the 'Run for Hope' event not only symbolizes the city's dedication to addressing drug abuse but also emphasizes the importance of unity and hope within the community.
"The significant turnout demonstrates the city's unwavering commitment to combatting stigma and discrimination associated with drug addiction, as well as its determination to create a drug-free society," she said.
As the city government continues to prioritize initiatives focused on prevention, intervention, and rehabilitation, the aim is to create a supportive environment for individuals facing drug addiction.
"By promoting inclusivity and support, the city inspires and empowers individuals to overcome their challenges and embrace a more promising future," Lumbatan stressed.
This event, according to Lumbatan serves as a testament to the city's resolve and determination to become a role model in effective drug abuse prevention and control measures.
