IN the midst of widespread confusion and panic over the alleged Nipah virus outbreak, Dr. Ellenietta HMV N. Gamolo, the officer in charge of the Department of Health Region 10, issued an important clarification yesterday, September 26, 2023.
Dr. Gamolo addressed the recent information circulating regarding the Nipah virus, a potentially deadly infection that can spread from animals to humans.
The controversy began when a memorandum from a local university in Cagayan de Oro City announced the implementation of online classes for basic education due to alleged "contamination by the New Nipah Virus."
This virus, first identified in 1999 after an outbreak in pigs and people in Malaysia and Singapore, can spread from animals to humans through close contact or exposure to infected animal fluids.
Infection with the Nipah virus can lead to symptoms ranging from fever, headaches, muscle pain, vomiting, and sore throat to more severe indications like dizziness, drowsiness, altered consciousness, and neurological signs pointing to acute encephalitis.
The most recent outbreak of the Nipah Virus was reported in India, with five confirmed cases.
Despite the circulating rumors, Dr. Gamolo clarified that the Department of Health has found no confirmed cases of the Nipah virus in the city or even the country.
Although there are reported cases of students and faculty displaying similar symptoms, Dr. Gamolo emphasized that these signs are not conclusive proof of a Nipah virus infection.
In her statement, Dr. Gamolo strongly recommended preventive measures to curb any potential spread of similar infections. These include regular hand washing, the correct use of masks, and adherence to minimum public health standards.
In order to thoroughly investigate the situation, the Department of Health Center of Health Development Northern Mindanao and the City Health Office of Cagayan de Oro are currently coordinating efforts.
As the situation unfolds, the department encourages the public to stay calm and continue practicing preventive measures.
