FORMER Cagayan de Oro City Mayor, Lawyer Oscar S. Moreno, expressed his heartfelt gratitude and admiration for boxer Carlo Paalam after his valiant effort in the 2024 Paris Olympics, despite his loss in the Quarter Finals of the Men’s Division last night.
Paalam’s journey to the Olympic Gold Medal was filled with challenges.
Though he lost in the Quarter Finals, his performance, particularly in the 3rd and final round, was commendable.
Paalam had a close 3-2 victory in the 1st round, and many had high hopes for his advancement to the Silver and Gold medal matches. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be.
Carlo’s quest was tough from the beginning. The 52-kg weight category was removed from the Paris 2024 Olympics, forcing him to compete in the 57-kg weight class against bigger and taller opponents.
Additionally, he suffered a severe shoulder injury in March during an Olympic-Qualifying tournament in Italy. This injury almost ended his career and made qualifying for the Olympics even more challenging.
Despite these obstacles, Carlo showed incredible determination. He recovered from his injury in just two months and went on to excel in the final Olympic-Qualifying Tournament in Thailand.
His ability to compete at a high level in the Paris Olympics, against heavier and taller opponents, was nothing short of miraculous.
Moreno praised Carlo for his courage and resilience.
"The quest for the Olympic Gold in the Men’s Division may have been halted with Carlo’s unfortunate loss, but we pray that it is only temporary," Moreno stated.
He emphasized Carlo’s unwavering spirit and his significant contributions to his family, community, and the nation.
Carlo Paalam, who rose from humble beginnings to become a national hero, has inspired many with his generosity and dedication.
The community eagerly awaits his return to Cagayan de Oro to celebrate his efforts and express their gratitude.
