By GENEVIEVE CANTOR Correspondent POLICE on Wednesday arrested five men who allegedly posed as New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in order to extort money from a businesswoman in Bugo, this city. The arrest was made after the businesswoman, Marycel Buhawe, 39, of Zone 6, Reyes Village, Bugo, complained and sought police assistance. She alleged that the suspects asked her money or “revolutionary tax” for their cause. Police identified the suspects as Mario Laparan, Cristituto Jaquilmac and Isabelo Dupalo of Pangasihan, Gingoog City; Salavador Lugalan of Baluarte, Tagoloan; and Alvin Alcoser of Sitio Calobo, San Fernando, Bukidnon. Buhawe told the police the group has repeatedly  asked money from her, and claimed they were raising funds from business establishments for the NPA anniversary. Buhawe said the group also asked her to give a sack of rice every month. She quoted the suspects as telling her, “Ayaw kabalaka, Ma’am, kay amo man sad ka protektahan kung mosuport ka sa organisasyon.” Buhawe said she gave in to the demands of the group in 2014, and even bought rugs from them for P1,800 each. “Daghan man ni sila nagkalain lain lang puli puli ug pangolekta. Ilabina gayud kung nay mga gyera, mag sige na sila pangayo. Pareho tong nay daw gyera sa Claveria, gipakomit mi ug usa aka sako nga bugas,” she said. She said she went to the police, and was given a hotline in case the group came back to ask from her again.
