CANCER claims the lives of four Filipinos every hour, a statistic highlighted by Dr. Bernadette Dy-Olaer, head of the Cancer Center at Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC), as she underscored the urgency of addressing the disease’s toll in the Philippines.
Speaking at the “Paglaum, Kusog ug Pagpahiuli” event on Monday, October 28, a provincial program focused on breast cancer awareness, Dr. Dy-Olaer noted that 189 out of every 100,000 Filipinos are diagnosed with cancer, contributing to a high national mortality rate.
She pointed out the importance of early detection, urging regular checkups and debunking the misconception that breast cancer only affects women.
The event, held at Misamis Oriental’s Provincial Capitol, showcased the provincial government’s commitment to cancer awareness under Governor Peter Unabia.
Talisayan Vice Mayor Rommel Maslog, representing Unabia, encouraged provincial employees to prioritize health screenings.
The awareness campaign extended to the Police Regional Office 10, where a Health and Wellness Fair on October 29 featured lectures and medical checkups, part of a collaborative effort to promote proactive health measures.
Health advocates stress that with an approach centered on prevention, early diagnosis, and access to treatment, the Philippines can make strides in reducing cancer-related deaths.
