ASPIRING city councilor Raven Pitogo has called for a stronger push to promote tourism in Cagayan de Oro, urging local officials to set aside politics and focus on the city’s potential.

Pitogo, 30, the youngest candidate vying for a 2nd District council seat, made his remarks during Piliay 2025, an online segment by Oro Broadcast Media on April 3.

When asked by host Lito Roluna about the city’s tourism industry, Pitogo voiced his frustration over what he sees as a lack of proper support and promotion.

“Kung naa may maigo sa akong iingon karon, sorry nalang, pero I am speaking from my heart and personal experience,” he said.

Pitogo cited his March-produced tourism video Tsada Ka Bay, now uploaded on YouTube, which he said aimed to highlight the city’s beauty.

However, he lamented the lack of support from local tourism officials.

“But sad to say, I did not get the support from the local office,” he said, adding that political differences hinder the development of tourism, not only in Cagayan de Oro but across the country.

While acknowledging the efforts of the local tourism office, Pitogo said improvements are needed.

“Simple lang nga mga signages sa atong mga tourism activities, I don’t see them,” he noted, recounting his disappointment when he visited a local tourism site only to find no signs or markers to guide visitors.

Fellow independent 2nd District candidate Rudy Oblimar echoed the need for improved tourism promotion. He suggested developing a tourist route connecting Cagayan de Oro to destinations like Dahilayan, Camiguin, and Maria Cristina Falls to make the city more competitive nationally.

However, he pointed out challenges, particularly environmental concerns.

“Kinsa may ganahan mag tan-aw, tan-aw ana atong suba bitaw, unya naay nanglutaw,” he said, referring to pollution in local waterways.

City spokesperson Janboy Actub has been asked for a response regarding the candidates’ statements and has promised to issue a comment.
