CAGAYAN de Oro City Mayor Rolando "Klarex" Uy has decided to deal with a big money problem left from the time before he was in charge.
Xavier University has sent the city a bill for using two of its dorm buildings for sick people to stay away from others.
This happened for 25 months when former city mayor Oscar ' Oca' Moreno was the mayor, from March 2020 to April 2022.
On the 3rd of January, this year, the office of the mayor got a bill from Xavier University.
The bill was for a lot of money that the city owed for using the dorms.
One dorm's cost was nearly 4 million pesos, and the other was over 3.5 million pesos.
Put together, the city owed the university more than 7.8 million pesos.
This all came out into the open when the mayor before Klarex, Oscar Moreno, said that the new mayor was not paying people and companies the city owed money to.
But the people working for Mayor Uy said that wasn't fair because the old mayor had left these big bills unpaid.
"In this context, it is hypocritical for the former mayor to criticize the current administration, considering that the previous administration at City Hall reneged on paying obligations, such as this one from the Jesuit-run university," said BenCyrus G. Ellorin, the political spokesperson for Mayor Klarex Uy.
“How come these bills piled for 25 months during the previous administration,” Ellorin stressed.
Now, the parts of the city government that handle money are working on how to pay back the university.
They're getting all the paperwork and things they need to pay off what the last mayor owed.
City Administrator Hilario Roy Raagas has said that the city is going to talk to the university to fix this problem.
They want to clear up any bad feelings and make their partnership even stronger.
The city and the university, which is run by a religious group called the Jesuits, want to keep working together well.
