A fireworks competition similar to the Pyro Musical Fireworks Competition held last Dec. 1 at the Rio de Oro Boulevard is planned for Chinese New Year 2024, Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando Uy said.
In his message during Monday morning’s flag-raising program, Mayor Uy said despite the congestion at the Rio de Oro Boulevard, the public especially the youth enjoyed the event.
“I would ask John Asuncion (chief, Oro Trade Investments Promotions Center) to find foreign participants for the event,” Mayor Uy said in Visayan.
Oro-TIPC and the City Tourism Office spearheaded this year’s week-long Chinese New Year festivities in Cagayan de Oro City held last January with support from the local Filipino-Chinese community.
The 2023 weeklong observance of Chinese New Year in the city is said to be the first in the country. Chinese New Year 2024 falls on a Saturday, Feb. 10.
The Dec. 1 Pyromusical Fireworks Competition sponsored by the city mayor’s office and held at Rio de Oro Boulevard was participated by pyrotechnic companies coming from Manila, Cotabato City, and Cagayan de Oro City with the city-based Chada Fireworks topping the event. Details of the proposed fireworks competition for Chinese New Year 2024 have yet to be worked out.
The Pyromusical Fireworks Competition was held an hour after the annual opening of the Symphony of Lights, a month-long event featuring the lighting of Gaston Park during the evenings.
In light of last Sunday’s bombing of the Mindanao State University (MSU) gym that killed four persons and wounded several others, Mayor Uy also called for security measures at the park.
“I’m asking the public to remind their visitors not to bring backpacks and wear caps when visiting Gaston Park for the Symphony of Lights during evenings. We want to prevent a similar incident (from happening),” Uy said in Visayan.
Mayor Uy earlier reminded police to revive the ‘one entrance’ policy in the city’s churches. (Stephen Capillas of the City Information Office)
