By NITZ ARANCON Correspondent A 50-YEAR OLD man died while four others were hurt as a result of a fire that broke out in Barangay 17 past midnight yesterday. Authorities said the fire destroyed some P5 million in structures. Barangay chairman Jerico Goldmar Ebabacol said at least 100 houses, mostly made of light materials, were destoyed, and over 300 families were displaced. Many of the fire victims are staying under the Maharlika Bridge. Ebabacol said there were reports that the fire started at the height of a quarrel among a group of residents. The fire broke out at around 12:48 am, resulting in the death of Alfredo Aguel who suffered cardiac arrest. Fire fighters placed the situation under control at around 4:30 am. SFO1 Dennis Dales said the fire also resulted in injuries to Joshua Chong, 10, John Lester Salarda, 13, Edel Jade Bayani and Alla Allego. Dales said Aguel was rushed to the Northern  Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) shortly after the fire broke out where he died of heart attack. Chong and Salarda were hurt when they accidentally had contact with a live electrical wire while Bayani accidentally stepped on a rusty nail during the rush. Allego was also rushed to the NMMC because his blood pressure but he recuperated. Dales said investigation showed the fire started at the house of one Manuel Burias. The cause of the fire remains unknown but Dales said investigators have not ruled out the possibility of arson because there was a reported arson attempt in the area last summer. Dales said a still unidentified person tried to explode a grenade by burning a piece of cloth attached to it. It was left in one corner but residents managed to put off the fire. City hall spokesperson Maricel Rivera said  the City Social Welfare and and Development Office (CSWD) have distributed relief goods that include noodles,  rice, kitchen utensils and medicines.
