PHILIPPINE Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA-10) Director Atty. Benjamin Gaspi denied allegations of “recycling” confiscated shabu, emphasizing strict protocols in handling seized illegal drugs.

Speaking at a press briefing on Feb. 12, Gaspi said every anti-drug operation is witnessed by three individuals to ensure transparency.

He pointed out that the exact amount of drugs seized is documented and submitted to forensic units.

“Napaka importante sa operation yung chain of custody. Yun yong pipirmahan para ma monitor. Pag na submit na po yon sa forensic chemist o sa laboratory, napaka impossible na yong tinatawag na recycling,” Gaspi said.

Confiscated drugs are secured in a vault, with access limited to him, the evidence custodian, and the chief of the laboratory.

“Lahat nang droga kahit na convict o na dismiss pa yan ay i-destroy,” Gaspi told reporters.

Regardless of the case outcome, he added, all seized drugs are destroyed through incineration in an authorized facility.

As of 2024, PDEA-10 has confiscated over 3,000 grams of shabu across Northern Mindanao, with each kilogram valued at approximately P6.8 million.

Gaspi also revealed shifting drug trafficking routes, stating that most shabu enters the country from abroad, often via Luzon before reaching Visayas and Mindanao.

He noted a recent increase in shipments from Sabah, Malaysia, to Zamboanga Peninsula, with authorities intercepting 22-24 kilograms in recent weeks.
