By NITZ ARANCON Correspondent A GROUP opposed to the restoration of the death penalty in the country would take to the streets here this afternoon. The protest, dubbed as “Panaghugpong Batok sa Death Penalty,” would start with a noise barrage near the gate of the Xavier University main campus at 2:30 pm. This would be followed by the “March for Life” from the capitol grounds to Kiosko Kagawasan in Divisoria. The activity is also in celebration of International Women’s Day. In another development, Msgr. Perseus Cabunoc, vicar general of the local Roman Catholic archdiocese, has echoed a rejection of proposals to involve priests or church representatives in the police’s “Oplan Tokhang” campaign. “Na-a na diha ang police, military, social welfare and  health personnel, mga barangay officials... wala na kinahanglana nga mokuyog pa ang mga pari o church representatives sa ilang Tokhang,” he said. Cabunoc said this after police regional director Chief Supt. Agripino Javier issued a memorandum directing his men to involve priests or church representatives in the “Tokhang” operations. He said the church would help in the campaign against illegal drugs in other ways like providing space where rehabilitation centers could be built, organizing symposia,  and giving “spiritual  guidance.” “Apan dili na kami anang  mokoyog pa sa pagtoktok  sa  balay,” Cabunoc said. He said local church leaders and lay ministers would meet with Archbishop Antonio Ledesma on Tuesday, and one of the items in the agenda is “Operation Tokhang.”
