THE New People’s Army (NPA) yesterday confirmed that it has captured and was holding an Army sergeant from Lapasan, this city, as a “prisoner of war” in Caraga.
The NPA in North Central Mindanao identified the soldier as Sgt. Adriano dela Peña Bengil, 34, of Barangay Lapasan, this city. The soldier, a member of the Army’s 26th Infantry Battalion, is married and has two children.
Allan Juanito, spokesperson of the NPA’s North Central Mindanao Regional Command, said Bengil was captured by rebels at an NPA checkpoint in Barangay Policarpo, San Luis town in Agusan del Sur in the morning of Sept. 19.
Juanito said the soldier, who serves as a team leader of the 26th IB’s Peace and Development Team that conducts Community Organizing for Peace and Development activities in Mahagsay, Agusan del Sur, came from Mahagsay and was bound to the San Luis town proper in order to send money to his family when rebels caught him. He said Bengil was being treated well.
