CONCERNS about classroom safety, City Mayor Rolando "Klarex" Uy's assures parents that unsafe classrooms and buildings will not be used in Cagayan de Oro City schools, said Mayor Uy's political spokesperson, BenCyrus Ellorin Thursday.
Ellorin said the City Engineer, Joel Momongan, has emphasized the importance of prioritizing student safety.
To address the issue, Ellorin said coordination has taken place between the city government and school principals to identify classrooms and buildings that need further evaluation and determine the proper course of action to ensure the continuation of classes.
At present, according to Ellorin inspection teams are finalizing their reports, which will be submitted to Mayor Klarex Uy for review and appropriate actions.
"Additional updates regarding the progress of the inspections will follow as more information becomes available," said Ellorin.
Earlier, public elementary and secondary schools in Cagayan de Oro City had no classes from December 5 to 6, 2023.
This temporary suspension of classes is to allow for a rapid post-earthquake damage assessment as mandated by Executive Order EO 401-2023, signed by Mayor Klarex Uy.
Meanwhile, City Information Officer, Ivy Guantero, has also confirmed that the engineering department is working diligently to compile a list of schools with cracks and conduct ongoing assessments of school buildings.
Guantero said that the city government will ensure that necessary updates and information regarding the safety of schools are communicated promptly to parents and stakeholders.
She said efforts are being made to prioritize student safety and ensure that classrooms and buildings meet required safety standards.
According to Guantero, the city government remains committed to addressing any issues promptly and transparently, working towards providing a secure and conducive learning environment for all students in Cagayan de Oro City.
