TO foster environmental consciousness among the youth, Cagayan de Oro City has launched a poster-making competition for elementary and secondary students.
The contest is part of the city's 2024 Zero Waste Month celebrations, aiming to encourage sustainable waste management practices.
The City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office, under the guidance of the Local Government Unit of Cagayan de Oro, organized the event.
The competition attracted numerous young participants eager to express their creativity while advocating for a greener future.
This year's theme, “Sustainable Waste Management in Livable Communities; Zero Waste in Philippine Waters by 2040,” reflects the city's commitment to environmental sustainability.
It underscores the importance of reducing waste in Philippine waters, a critical issue affecting marine life and the broader ecosystem.
Sheila Lumbatan, the city mayor's office chief of staff, disclosed that the contest's goal is to harness the artistic abilities of the city's youth to promote environmental awareness.
"By doing so, the contest aims to inspire actions that contribute to the protection and conservation of the environment," she said.
The poster-making contest serves not only as a platform for showcasing talent but also as an educational opportunity, according to Lumbatan.
She added the participants researched and learned about environmental issues to accurately convey the message of their artwork.
"This initiative is part of a broader strategy to involve the community, especially the younger generation, in environmental stewardship," Lumbatan explained.
Winners of the contest are set to be announced later in the month, with their artwork to be featured in various city campaigns promoting Zero Waste practices.
The city hopes that these visual messages will resonate with residents and encourage the adoption of habits that support the vision of zero waste in Philippine waters by 2040, shared Lumbatan.
