“ORDERS cannot move kung wala’y backhoe ug walay driver sa backhoe.”

This was the statement of Gusa Barangay Chairman Marlo Tabac, who was recently ousted as vice president of the Liga ng mga Barangay, during a closed-door session held by the Cagayan de Oro chapter on Thursday, June 5.

The session’s agenda focused on the petition signed by over 64 barangay chairpersons seeking Tabac’s removal due to a loss of trust and confidence.

In his remarks, Tabac likened his situation to biblical figures Judas and Pontius Pilate.

He questioned the motivation behind the petition, asking if someone was influencing the members’ decision.

Tabac insisted he would not recognize the dismissal, calling it illegal and not supported by the organization’s constitution and bylaws.

He cited Section 3 of their bylaws, which lists valid grounds for removal: abuse of authority, three consecutive unexcused absences, dereliction of duty, violation of the Philippine Constitution, gross negligence, and offenses punishable by imprisonment.

Tabac emphasized that none of these applied to him.

“During my tenure, I am duly elected. There was no case filed against me. Loss of trust and confidence is not a basis,” he said.

He also denied rumors that he intended to run for a city council seat, saying his refusal to step down was about upholding their constitution.

“I stand here today, not because I wanted to become a city councilor. I stand to protect our constitution,” Tabac said.

Barangay Chairman Jao Gumapac of Baikingon, one of the petition signatories, said the matter will now be elevated to the national Liga ng mga Barangay.

“Nawala ang among pagsalig,” Gumapac said, adding that the national body would determine the grounds for Tabac’s removal. The position of vice president is currently vacant as a result of the vote.

ABC President Alam Lim also weighed in, saying he was simply fulfilling his duty.

“Nisanong lang ko,” Lim said.

Meanwhile, Tabac announced plans to challenge the petition before the national Liga and maintained that he harbors no resentment toward his fellow officials.

“Wala koy pagmahay, salamat for that. I will protect the Liga, not for myself,” he said.

Asked if someone was orchestrating the move against him, Tabac affirmed that he believed so.

“Everything, orders cannot move kung walay backhoe ug walay driver sa backhoe,” he said again, alluding to unseen forces behind the petition.

Tabac said he intends to file legal action, claiming those who signed the petition may be liable for grave abuse of authority.
