THE Philippine National Police in Northern Mindanao is urging supporters of all political parties to remain calm and respect each other’s choices as tensions rise ahead of the May 12 elections.
PNP-10 spokesperson Police Major Joann Navarro said in a phone interview that maintaining peace and order is the top priority of regional police leadership under Police Brigadier General Jaysen de Guzman.
“We are calling on everyone to respect one another’s opinions and choices. We are in a democratic country, and we have the right and freedom to support whoever we want,” Navarro said.
She acknowledged reports of a heated political atmosphere, particularly in Misamis Oriental’s First District, but noted that such intensity is expected during campaign season.
“The heat of politics is normal, especially from supporters showing loyalty to their respective candidates,” she said. “It’s fine as long as no lives are put at risk.”
In Gingoog City, Police Lieutenant Colonel Dennis de los Santos, city police chief, confirmed some reports of political tension. However, he assured the public that measures are in place to prevent any escalation, including dialogue with supporters from opposing sides.
“We are conducting close monitoring through our intelligence units, in coordination with barangay officials and other augmentation forces,” De los Santos said.
He added that vote-buying is also being closely watched, though no formal reports have been received as of this writing.
