SENATE Committee on Basic Education, Arts and Culture on Friday supported House Bill 8287 that seeks the establishment of the Cagayan de Oro City Cultural Center and Museum.

The said Education, Arts and Culture Committee was chaired by Senator Sherwin Gatchalian who approved the House Bill authored by deputy speaker and Cagayan de Oro 2nd District Rep. Rufus Rodriguez.

The bill seeks to establish the cultural center and museum in Cagayan De Oro City to promote culture and the arts, according to Rodriguez.

Under the proposed measure, Rodriguez said the facility shall serve as the “institutional medium for the collection, preservation, and enhancement of the cultural, artistic, archeological, social, historical and religious heritage of the city and its environs.”

The CDO cultural center and museum will be supervised by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA), he said.

During the hearing, Eileen Escobar San Juan attended and manifested the city government’s support for the Rodriguez bill.

“I am thankful to the Senate Committee on Basic Education, Arts and Culture chaired by Senator Sherwin Gatchalian for approving my proposed bill yesterday.

This will significantly help the City of Cagayan de Oro in promoting our rich culture and the arts not only among Kagay-anons, but also the tourists from all over the world, Rodriguez said.

The bill is now calendared for plenary deliberation in the Senate for final approval before President Rodrigo Duterte signs it into law. (Ben Balce)
