SURIGAO City ― The Xavier University collegiate team made its presence felt as a titular threat on the second day of action of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (Ceap) Mindanao Meet on Wednesday, June 19, here.

XU bagged a surprising six golds, seven silvers, and one bronze all made on day two of the meet.

XU’s taekwondo squad became the darling of the delegation as it pulled six gold, six silver, and a bronze medal.

Daniel Abella gave XU’s first gold after ruling the individual men’s poomsae, while its second gold came from the women’s team poomsae comprised of Honey Macana, Paula Gwynzelle Labadan, and Mariah Avril Besande.

Besande and Macana won also individual gold medals from fin weight -46kgs and welterweight -67kg in the women’s sparring division, respectively.

Honey Amor Buenafe followed through XU’s fifth gold after dominating in the middleweight -73kgs women’s sparring, while Samantha Demetrio lorded in the heavyweight +73kgs women’s sparring.

Besande and Macana got their third medal. Besande won a silver in the individual women’s poomsae, while Macana had a silver medal with Elrique Vizon Orcales in the mixed pair poomsae.

Also winning silvers were Daniel Kian Onate in -54 kgs men’s fin weight, Abella in the flyweight men’s, Paula Labadan in women’s flyweight -49 kgs, and Damian Dominique Mansueto in the featherweight -68 kgs.

Orcales also bagged a bronze in the men’s bantam -63 kgs category.

“We were all determined and all their hard work paid off,” said the humble XU taekwondo coach Groover Warren Low Torralba.

XU’s Xceed Fom fell short of a gold medal finish but just settled for a silver medal in the E-sports tournament.

Xceed Fom includes Christian Rey Pontillas, Vince Joseph Llamis, Vince Gabriel Bollozos, Nathan Dave Albasin, Christian Miguel Linaac, Jude Emmanuel Gadrinab, and Edward Alejandro Van Ommeren.

Elijah John Tomolin acted as team manager for the XU E-sports team.

Other sports are still in progress with XU’s chess team in a must-win Thursday’s last round.

XU’s basketball men and women are still in strong contention for a medal finish.

Football and swimming are held separately at the Fr. Saturnino Urios University in Butuan.
