CAGAYAN de Oro City — Former National Defense Secretary Norberto Gonzales has backed the Philippine government’s partnership with Pax Silica, saying it could open opportunities for advanced technology and high-end manufacturing in the country.
Gonzales made the statement during his visit to Cagayan de Oro City on Sept. 28.
The Philippines became the 13th formal signatory to Pax Silica, a US-led international initiative launched last year to strengthen and secure global supply chains for advanced technologies.
Gonzales, who served as defense secretary during the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, said the partnership could help the Philippines develop capabilities in advanced technology and high-end manufacturing.
He said these technologies could eventually support the production of gadgets and other technology-related products.
“Importante na magkaroon tayo nang ganyang klaseng capability,” Gonzales said.
He also urged the government to go beyond simply joining the initiative and gain a deeper understanding of the technologies involved.
Gonzales said developing local expertise would allow the Philippines to maximize the potential benefits of its partnership with the United States.
“Pax Silica is highly modern,” he said, adding that he would push for the use of smaller and safer nuclear energy technologies.
Gonzales also stressed the need to strengthen the country’s water infrastructure, particularly flood catchment systems, to support developments and investments linked to advanced industries.
For Gonzales, the partnership presents an opportunity for the Philippines to modernize its technological capabilities while developing expertise that could support future industries.
